A scatter symbol is the one symbol on the grid that ignores the paylines. Land enough of them anywhere, and a feature starts; on some games they pay a prize as well. The problem players usually bring is the reverse: scatters that will not come. This page sets out how many each game needs, what they pay, and why a long wait changes nothing.
Scatter meaning in plain terms
Scatter meaning comes down to position: a regular symbol must line up along a payline or connect in a cluster, while a scatter counts wherever it lands. Two jobs follow from that:
- Trigger: a stated number of scatters starts a feature, usually free spins.
- Pay: on some titles, the scatters themselves pay a multiple of the stake.
Everything else, the number needed, the reels allowed and the feature started, is set game by game.
Scatter symbol counts in six lobby slots
| Game | Scatters needed | What they start |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit Party (Pragmatic Play) | 3 or more | Free spins on the 7x7 cluster grid |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 (Pragmatic Play) | 4 or more | Free spins with the total win multiplier meter |
| Wolf Gold (Pragmatic Play) | 3 or more, on reels 1, 3 and 5 | Free spins |
| Lucky Neko (PG Soft) | 4 | 10 or more free spins |
| Mahjong Ways (PG Soft) | 3, plus 2 spins per extra | 12 free spins, multiplier climbing to 10x |
| Wild Bounty Showdown (PG Soft) | 3 or more | Free spins that open at an 8x multiplier |
The numbers differ more than most players assume. If you liked the quick trigger in Fruit Party’s cluster grid, note that Gates of Olympus 1000’s free spins ask for one scatter more. Wolf Gold’s reel-limited scatters only count on three of its five reels.
Scatter pays: when the whole grid pays by count
Scatter pays also names a whole payout system, not just one symbol. Gates of Olympus 1000 has no paylines at all: every symbol pays by count, so eight or more of a kind anywhere on its 6x5 grid make a win. In effect, every symbol behaves like a scatter for paying purposes, while the true scatters still start the free spins.
That is different from a cluster game such as Fruit Party, where five or more matching symbols must touch each other. Same family of mechanics, different rule on where symbols may sit.
Super scatter titles on the lobby
Pragmatic Play’s tile on the lobby lists seven Super Scatter titles, among them Gates of Olympus Super Scatter, Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter, Starlight Princess Super Scatter and Sugar Rush Super Scatter. The name tells you the scatter is the headline feature; the paytable tells you what it does, so read it before assuming it works like the original game. The Pragmatic Play slot shelf lists the studio’s other titles.
Scatters versus wilds, and the “due” myth
- A wild replaces regular symbols; a scatter replaces nothing. How a wild symbol substitutes covers the other half.
- Two scatters and a wild are still two scatters on almost every game.
- A scatter is never due. After 200 spins without a trigger, the 201st spin carries the same odds as the very first.
That last point is the most expensive myth in slots; slot tips about session caps show what to do instead. The casino terms glossary defines the rest of the vocabulary, the app download explainer for phone players covers mobile play, and the slot games hub lists every shelf.
How to Get Started
-
Read the trigger count
Open the paytable and note the scatter count that opens the feature and whether those symbols must sit on particular reels, as Wolf Gold's do.
-
Check whether scatters pay
See if the scatter pays a prize itself or only starts the feature. Many games use it purely as a trigger.
-
Ignore the drought
However long since the last trigger, the next spin's chance is unchanged, so never raise the stake to chase one.
